Happy Nerd New Year! Today is the last binary date of the 21st Century! When not busily buzzing at our desks, we’ve been taking breaks by thoroughly wiping down our keyboards (flu season is here – be vigilant!), naming all the Internet memes listed in le Internet Medley video, puzzling over Google’s new brand pages, and making memes of Oprah Running Away from Things. We’re logging off this weekend with these in mind:

Ashton Kutcher Announces a Twitter Break

Actor Ashton Kutcher, one of Twitter’s most famous celebrities at a whopping 8,268,436 followers, announced that he’ll be taking a hiatus from his account after some tweets incurred wrath and scrutiny. The tweets in question were in response to the firing of Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno in the wake of the school’s child sex abuse scandal, reading:

“How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste”

“Heard Joe was fired, fully recant previous tweet!”

“Didn’t have full story. #admitwhenYoumakemistakes.”

All tweets were pulled afterwards and an apology was issued instead. Kutcher also announced that he has turned over content control of his Twitter feed to Katalyst Media. With Ashton gone, will Justin Bieber now reign completely – and solely – supreme in the Twitterverse?

Google + Brand Pages vs Facebook
Google + has finally launched brand pages for companies – ours included! – but just how do they compare to Facebook’s model? To be sure, both platforms have their individual pros and cons, but at the moment, we’re a bit perplexed by Google’s decision to prohibit contests and promotions on Google +. Points docked.

The Muppets Lose Out to Billy Crystal
With Eddie Murphy pulling out of his Oscars hosting gig, the netizens on Twitter took to throwing out replacement suggestions and lobbied for their favorite choices. While Billy Crystal announced that he’ll be taking over hosting, we’re bummed that our favorite contenders, the Muppets, lost the bid, despite a strong a Twitter and Facebook campaign. It’s ok, Miss Piggy, at least you and Kermie got to host the WWE Monday Night Raw.

FOX Invites Viewers to “Hang Out” with GOP Candidates
Fox New’s Special Report with Bret Baier has invited three (just three!) users to join in on a series of Google + Hangouts with GOP presidential candidates leading up to the election, the first to be held with Governor Mitt Romney on Nov. 15. To qualify, hopeful participants are invited to audition by leaving a comment on Special Report’s thread. Those who are not chosen can still have their questions answered (or not answered) by candidates. To assure you that we are bipartisan and objective, we’ve linked you to our social media savvy President’s Tumblr. You can also check out 10 on-air political oopsies, or even make your own Rick Perry meme.

Starbucks to “Surprise and Delight” with Augmented Reality App
Starbucks intends to kick off the holiday season with the introduction of an augmented reality app, Cup Magic on Tuesday. Simply point your phone’s camera at your red holiday cup or any of the additional 47 Starbucks objects to prompt any of the five animated characters you can interact with. Word has it that those who unlock all five characters are in the running for a yet unnamed prize (if it’s an endless supply of coffee, we’re so there). In addition to whiling away little moments here and there, you send ecards and holiday offers to friends and family through the app, spreading the holiday cheer.

Sh%*! 16% of Cellphones have WHAT?
Sure, we touch our phones a lot throughout the day and yes, our phones are always within arm’s reach, but we choked when we read that 16% of cellphones have poop on them. Yes, excrement. This handy (pun intended) Tech Germs infographic left us cringing (did you know that keyboards are five times dirtier than a toilet seat?) and reaching for the antibacterial wipes. And side eyeing everyone else.

Spotify Rolls Out “Private Listening”

Music lovers need not worry about being unfriended for newsfeed spam. Spotify announced via Tweet a new feature that’ll prevent auto-publishing listening choices. The new “private listening” mode will refrain from publishing on Facebook, so long as you remain in the mode. Though you’ll still need a Facebook account to sign up, you can blast your 80s Power Ballad playlist on loop without remorse.

Lunchtime Reading Becomes Perilous with Facebook Timeline:

Yikes! One writer at Mashable noticed an embarrassing reading trend of a professional acquaintance who had also enabled Facebook’s Timeline ahead of time. While our lunchtime reading is SFW and quirky at most, it’s still not content we want to constantly push on newsfeeds. For the wallflowers, this quick how-to shows how to nip those slip ups in the bud, especially if you want to keep your passion for reading cat meme blog posts a secret.

Google Analytics Goes Real Time

Google Analytics has announced the arrival of a real time dashboard, intended to update user events as they happen, gauge the impact of channels like Twitter and Facebook, and retrieve results of custom analytics queries instead of waiting 24 hours. In addition to Real Time, Google Analytics has announced a premium tier for companies who want more support than is offered with its free service.

Facebook and Online Shopping

Some wouldn’t have thought of Facebook as an online shopping platform, but the addition of open graph and a real time News Ticker may certainly change – at least – one’s reach of influence and discovery of new products. With clearer permissions, different verb actions (think “want” “own” “saving up for”), a constant stream updating you on friends’ purchasing activities, and the ability to create wishlists, brands and users alike can create a more relevant and social method to purchasing. But first, we’d like to see what brand pages could look like.

A Visual History of Twitter

We took a minute to take in this infographic that put together a visual timeline of Twitter’s history. Numbers and percentages are always more interesting when there’re humorous caricatures to accompany them, although we noted that 5% of users are creating 75% of content. Sidenote – Ashton Kutcher is still around?

P Diddy talks Twitter on Ellen DeGeneres (YouTube)

In what will certainly become a smashing viral success, P Diddy, a relatively newcomer to Twitter (@iamdiddy), educates Ellen DeGeneres (now on Twitter – @theellenshow- although at Press Time has yet to “tweet”).

In typical Diddy fashion he pronounces himself the most popular man on Twitter [112,820 followers - all #s as of 3/11 @ 5 p.m.] although Shaq: @The_Real_Shaq, [280, 948 followers], Ashton Kutcher @aplusk [290,534 followers], and non-celebrities (although arguably Social Media celebs) such as Pete Cashmore: @mashable [221,189 followers] and Kevin Rose: @kevinrose [263,953 followers - and the guy who got Ashton & Demi to tweet] have more “followers” than he does.

Whether he’s the king of Twitter or not, the trend of celebrities using Twitter as a platform to speak directly to their fans is certainly a viable (and smart) usage of the “tweeting” capabilities. In the same way that brands like Comcast: @comcastcares and Jet Blue @jetblue have communicated effective and important information and solutions to their consumers, strengthening their brand image. Celebrities can utilize Twitter to clear up rumors, make big announcements, seem more accessible to fans, and ultimately strengthen their brand – which is what is also compelling to us as marketers and branders – the tweeter can now be the driver of their own brand message.

In the clip above Diddy butchers the explanation of Twitter calling it a “mass e-mail” which it certainly resembles, but isn’t. But the fact that he is on Ellen, explaining Twitter, and going out of his way to disclose the ways he utilizes it is what is important. His excitement about it as a communication tool is the excitement I hope to instill in all of my clients.

I believe that we can officially say that Twitter has gone mainstream.

Note: Although I jab at Diddy’s explanation of Twitter, I find it tough myself to explain it in less than a paragraph. Does anyone have a succinct explanation they use? Do share!
